about

This is one of my favorite tracks on the album because of the story it tells. The song consists of three different memories about how my mom encouraged my musical endeavors: from banging the pots and pans while my mom cooked dinner, to listening to the record player at Christmas time, to playing in punk rock bands in high school. And, yes, the instrumental part is me actually playing on pots and pans (some of which were her old set) with kitchen utensils.

lyrics

I remember a yellow kitchen
Sitting down on the vinyl floor
Momma cooking an early supper
Leaving open the cabinet door

From within the walls my hands would pull
The instruments, those tools of my trade
The pots and pans would clash like a cymbal crash
Like the music that I’d soon learning how to play
It’s funny how it all began with the pots and pans

I remember the orange shag carpet
Sleeping bags on the living room floor
Momma starting the record player
Counting the hours to Christmas morn

Alvin and the Chipmunks sang
That song about missing their two front teeth
And as the record played we’d ruminate
About the presents underneath the tree
It’s funny how it all began with the pots and pans

I remember my parents’ basement
Punk rock band blasting through the house
Momma cooking the rainbow jello
Bringing it down for the boys to try out

Tragic Blonde, those Sagrave songs,
Music that you’d think she would despise
But all the while she’d laugh and smile
A joyful sense of pride within her eyes
It’s funny how it all began with the pots and pans
