about

In this song, I try to capture what my dad must have felt as he began losing his wife of over 50 years. Toward the end, there were times where she didn’t recognize or trust him, but he always supported her, and had dinner with her every day after she was transferred to the memory care unit. I’m thankful for the example he set for us, and for how well he took care of her.

lyrics

I couldn’t have known as a 20 year old
That I’d end up the wealthiest man in the world
‘Cause a decade would lead me to your red front door
With a ring made of rose-colored Black Hills gold

When you wake, will you fall in love again?
Will you even know my name?

They’re the same, all these days
The lines on our faces
Remind me of places long gone

Are memories all that we are?

I couldn’t have known as a 30 year old
That I’d end up in this drawn out scenario
But the world has its ways and the Lord gives and takes
And I know it’s cliche but you’re worth all the pain

When you wake, will you fall in love again
Will you even know my name

They’re the same, all these days
The lines on our faces
Remind me of places long gone

Are memories all that we are?
I meant it: Til death do us part

It’s a sad joke, a cruel world
Where the more that you love
The more that it hurts
It’s a sad joke, a cruel world
Where the more that you love
The more that it hurts
It’s a sad joke, a cruel world
Where the more that you love
The more that it hurts
It’s a sad joke, such a cruel world
